The woman in black - audiences and institutions

The woman in black audiences and institutions

1) 'The woman in black's target audience is predominantly going to be female because for some reason they like Daniel Radcliff. They will probably be teens, from 15 -19, despite the films classification of 12 which in my opinion is too young. They will be English, and upper class because the main character is quite posh compared to the people in the village, probably class A or B, i think it is a bit too mature for lesser categories of people.

2) The producers of this film did pretty much everything possible to market this film. Half the overall budget for the film was spendt on marketing. They produced T shirts, TV adverts, little torches, posters, mugs and all kinds of other merchandise. The biggest aspect of the marketing campaign was of course Daniel Radcliff, every promotional image for the film involved his face in some way and he did countless interviewst publicise it. 3 different television advertisements were broadcast to suit the different audiences that be watching at the time of day, varying in 'spookiness'.

3) I think in terms of the producers trying to get word out about the film, they did everything they could, in fact in my opinion they did a little too much, there was no need really to bring out so much of the smaller merchandise a) because anyone who likes Daniel Radcliff or even likes Harry Potter will more than likely know about the film anyway, b) because a mug with a picture on it doesn't tell people anything about the actual film and very few people would buy a mug to do with a film that they dont even know if they are going to like, and c) because the torches, for example, would probably be on sale at the movie theatre so in order to buy one you would already be going to see the film anyway so were is the publicisation.

4) Clearly a lot of people were excited about the release of this film because it made 3 million dollars more that the budget of 17 million dollars in its first weekend at 2855 theatres, and went on to achieve a gross profit of  $54,322,273 in the usa alone, including foreign grosses this figure is over 130,000,000 dollars. Making it a huge success.

5) The budget was $17,000,000, half of which was spent on marketing and publicisation. The film sent Daniel Radcliffs career in a new direction as he wanted to be seen as a serious actor after Harry Potter

6) Mainly the film was successful because of Radcliff, regardless of what the film was about i think that due to the widespread love of Harry Potter, a soon as anyone sees his name in a film they want to see it. Also, you dont spent half the production budget on publicising a film without getting some extra people to come and see it, even people who would blindly love to go and see the film may not have heard about it and the adverts, billboards and television interviews more than sufficiently serficed in getting the word around.
